The Flex Radio Aurora

Flex Radio introduced their latest new product, Aurora, at Dayton hamvention 2025. This is a 500W transceiver based on polar modulation, the same SSB generation method used in QMX.

Flex founder Gerald Youngblood came to the QRP Labs booth with two of their engineers on the Aurora project, to look at QMX. Which was quite an honour. (CLICK ON PHOTOS below for larger versions).

Later, I visited the Flex booth for quite some time and discussed QMX, Aurora and Polar modulation with Tony K1KP, the co-designer of Aurora; and met many of the rest of the Flex team.

Flex had an impressive demo of Aurora, with a literal "brick on key" producing 500W of RF into a very large, very hot dummy load; the Aurora meanwhile was almost cold, demonstrating the high efficiency benefits of polar modulation. Tony also explained that the heatsinks, enclosure and many other components are the same as used in Flex' 100W radio models, again showcasing the spectacular advantages of this technology.
